Thai languages - Thai (English)
A family of related languages found in Thailand, Laos, the Malay Peninsula, southern China, the highlands of northern Vietnam, Assam in India, and the Shan region of Myanmar. Together they have a combined total of more than 64 million speakers. They are divided into four major dialect groups. The main languages are Thai (Siamese), Lao (Lao), Yuan (Northern Thai), and Southern Thai in the south; Shan, Lu, Khun, and Khamti of Assam in the west; Black Thai, White Thai, Toh, and Nung in the east (Tonkin); and Zhuang (Zhuang), Phui (Middle), and sometimes Li (Vietnamese) in Hainan in the north (China). All are mainly monosyllabic, isolating, and fairly homogeneous except for differences in the number of tones and vocabulary. These are closely related to the Kham, Sui, and Mak languages, which are centered in Guizhou Province in China, but their cognate relationships with Tibetan, Burmese, and Chinese have not yet been established.
