A former town in Tome District, in the north-central part of Miyagi Prefecture. Located at the confluence of the Kitakami River and Hasama River. During the Edo Period, the area was developed several times by the Date clan, and has a large area of rice paddies. The Kesennuma Line runs through the area. In April 2005, it was incorporated as a city by merging with Hasama Town, Tome Town, Towa Town, Nakata Town, Yoneyama Town, Ishigoe Town, and Minamikata Town in Tome District, and Tsuyama Town in Motoyoshi District, to form Tome City. 32.85 km2 . 7,395 people (2003). 宮城県中北部,登米(とめ)郡の旧町。北上川と迫(はさま)川の合流点に位置する。江戸時代,伊達氏による数次の開拓が行われ,水田が広い。気仙沼線が通じる。2005年4月登米郡迫町,登米町,東和町,中田町,米山町,石越町,南方町,本吉郡津山町と合併し市制,登米市となる。32.85km2。7395人(2003)。
