Aogari (English spelling) soiling

Japanese: 青刈り - あおがり（英語表記）soiling

This refers to the cutting of crops while they are still growing in order to use them as livestock feed, and the raw stems and leaves that are cut. Soiling has the advantages of increasing the appetite of livestock by providing them with fresh, raw stems and leaves, preventing the loss of nutrients and vitamins in the feed, and eliminating the need to turn them into hay or silage, but it has the disadvantage that only the amount needed must be cut each day. Crops used for soiling are called soiling crops. Generally, crops grown for their grains are often cut for use before the grains ripen or before they flower.

家畜の飼料とするために，作物を生育途中で刈り取ること，および刈り取った生の茎葉をいう。青刈りは新鮮な生の茎葉を家畜に与えるため家畜の食欲を増し，飼料の栄養成分やビタミン類の損失がなく，乾草やサイレージとする手間がかからない利点がある反面，必要量だけを毎日刈り取らなくてはならないという欠点がある。　青刈りに用いる作物を青刈作物soiling cropと呼ぶ。一般には子実を採るために栽培する作物を，子実が熟す前にあるいは花の咲く前に青刈りして利用することが多い。
