A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher (illustration). Total length is about 15 cm. Males have a blue back, dirty white undersides, and orange-yellow feathers on the sides. Females have a green-brown back, dirty white undersides, orange-yellow sides, and blue from the waist to the tail. Young males have the same plumage as females. They breed in the eastern part of the Asian continent, and migrate to Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago in autumn and winter. In Japan, they breed mainly in subalpine coniferous forests except Kyushu, and migrate to lowland, shady forests in autumn and winter. They often catch insects near the ground, but also like to eat plant seeds in autumn and winter.

スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約15cm。雄は背面が青く，下面は汚白色，脇に橙黄色の羽毛がある。雌は背面が緑褐色で，下面は汚白色，脇は橙黄色をしており，腰部から尾にかけては青い。雄の若鳥は雌と同様の羽色をしている。アジア大陸東部で繁殖し，秋･冬季には東南アジア，マレー諸島などに渡る。日本では，九州を除いた地域のおもに亜高山帯の針葉樹林で繁殖し，秋･冬季には低地の薄暗い林に移動する。地表付近で昆虫をとって食べることが多いが，秋･冬季には植物の種子も好んで食べる。
