Hidemasa Katori
Born January 1, 1874 in Chiba
[Died] January 31, 1954. Tokyo metalworker and poet. Real name: Hidejiro. Graduated from the metalworking department of Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1897. Studied metalworking techniques at the same school's research department, and taught the history of metalworking at his alma mater from 1903. Became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1929, and an Imperial Household Artist in 1934. His works, such as incense burners and tea kettles, are elegant pieces that combine profound traditional techniques with a sharp modern sensibility. He established the Tokyo Metalworking Society (1908), and contributed to the development of new metalworking art in Japan, and also served as a member of the National Treasure Preservation Society. He was also a poet of the Araragi school since the founding of the Negishi Tanka Society. His main works include "Draft History of Japanese Metalworkers" and "History of Japanese Metalworkers," and his poetry collections "After the Sixtieth Birthday" and "Fuigo Festival." In 1978, he was awarded the Order of Culture.

鋳金家,歌人。本名,秀治郎。 1897年東京美術学校鋳金科卒業。同校研究科で鋳金技術を研究,1903年から母校で鋳金史を教えた。 29年帝国美術院会員,34年帝室技芸員。香炉,茶釜など,重厚な伝統的技術に鋭い近代的感覚を盛込んだ格調高い作品がある。東京鋳金会を設立 (1908) ,日本の新しい金工芸術の発展に尽し,国宝保存会委員もつとめた。根岸短歌会創立以来のアララギ派の歌人でもある。主著『日本鋳工史稿』『日本金工史』,歌集『還暦以後』『ふいご祭』など。 53年文化勲章受章。
