A Russian dancer and choreographer. Born in Moscow, he studied at the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Choreographic School and joined the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet. He was discovered by Diaghilev and joined the Ballets Russes in 1914 as Nijinsky's successor. With Diaghilev's guidance in all aspects of the arts, his talent as a choreographer blossomed. He later formed the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, and after World War II, he formed his own ballet company. He made a great contribution to the popularization of ballet with his light-hearted, comical works, but he also had a wide-ranging influence on modern ballet, such as being the first to attempt to turn a symphony into a ballet. He also choreographed and performed in films such as The Red Shoes (1947) and The Tales of Hoffmann (1951). Her major works include "The Strange Shop" (1919, Rossini), "The Three-Cornered Hat" (1919, Falla), "Symphonie Fantastique" (1936, Berlioz), and "Les Joys de Paris" (1938, Offenbach). →Danilova →Related topics Ashton | Satie | Stravinsky | Cecchetti | The Rite of Spring | Hindemith | Respighi
