Among the New Testament apocrypha, this is one of a group of documents collectively known as the "Infancy Gospels." It is the second oldest after the "Protoevangelion of James," and was written in the 2nd century. It is a series of readings that parallels later anecdotes about the infant Jesus, and ends with "Jesus at age 12." It has little specific doctrinal interest, and is not related to the other apocryphal document, the "Gospel of Thomas." In addition to Greek, many other translations and manuscripts remain in ancient languages. [Onuki Takashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
