Bamboos and bamboos of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). A deformed product created by a mutation of Moso bamboo. Near the base of the culm or under the branches, almost all internodes are short and dense, the nodes are curved like lightning bolts, the partitions of the nodes are slanted and connect alternately at one end to each other above and below, and the internodes swell alternately to form a tortoiseshell shape. Due to the dense internodes at the bottom of the culm, the height is lower than normal Moso bamboo. It is sometimes planted in gardens as an ornamental plant.

イネ科（APG分類：イネ科）のタケ・ササ類。モウソウチクの突然変異によってできた奇形品。稈(かん)の基部付近ないし枝下のほとんど全部の節間が短く詰まり、節が電光状に屈曲し、節の隔壁は斜めになって上下互いに一端で交互に接し、節間が交互に膨出して亀甲状になる。稈の下部の節間が詰まっただけ高さは正常のモウソウチクより低くなる。観賞用として庭などに植えることもある。
