Born: March 15, 1836, Osaka [Died] October 9, 1917. A tayu of the Hyogo Gidayu style. His real name was Futami Kinsuke. His first name was Nanbu Tayu. In 1860, he took the stage name of Takemoto Koshijidayu II. He was mentored by Nozawa Kichibei III, Takemoto Harutayū V, and Toyosawa Danpei II, and in 1883 he became the head troupe of the Bunraku troupe. After taking the stage name of Harutayū in 1903, he received the rank of Settsu Daijō. He retired in 1913. He is one of the most famous Bunraku puppets of the Meiji period. He possessed a beautiful voice, and in contrast to the realism of his rival Takemoto Osumidayū III, he had an aesthetic style of performance, and in his later years he reached a state of elegance and depth. His best known pieces include "Jukshu-ko", "Sendai-hagi", and "Chushingura" (7th act).
