A drawing of the length and joints of the fingers by those who cannot write, instead of signing their own hand. It has been used in China since before the 6th century, and is specified in the "Daho Ling" (701), which is based on the Tang Dynasty system, as a substitute for signatures on divorce documents. It was used in China until the Ming Dynasty, and was also used in Joseon and Annam (Vietnam), and is still used in Vietnam today. In Japan, there are examples on loan documents and sales tickets from the Nara period to the early Kamakura period, and it is usually done using the index finger of the right hand with the tip facing up, but there are also drawings using the left hand with the tip facing down. From the Heian period onwards, it was limited to women, and towards the end of the period, it became a formality and some did not accurately indicate the length of the fingers.
