A triangular thread shape devised by the British Whitworth as a standard thread due to the need for thread interchangeability. It was the first thread standard ever created and was adopted in the UK. The thread angle is 55° and the size series is given in inch dimensions. It was subsequently widely adopted in European countries, Japan and other countries, but after 1958 each country switched to the international standard ISO thread, and it was abolished in Japan after 1968.
