The Gospels of the New Testament Apocrypha, found in the Nag Hammadi texts in 1945, are a collection of 114 sayings of Jesus in Coptic. They were originally translations (c. 400) of Greek texts, some of which are found in the Greek Oxyrhynchus Papyrus, and were recorded by Greek Church Fathers and Gnostics, and some overlap with the Hebrew and Egyptian Gospels. They were used mainly by Gnostics, Syrian Christians, and Manichaeans in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, and have a strong Gnostic flavor. There is debate as to whether these sayings are based on oral traditions that preceded the Synoptic Gospels or on the traditions of the Synoptic Gospels. (→ Apocrypha )
