A snail shell of the family Muscidae (illustration). The shell is top-shaped, 3cm high and 2.8cm wide. It is brown with a series of black cloud-shaped spots, and small black spots are lined up around the last coil. The shell opening is round and the inside is pearlescent. The lid is thin, round, and brown. It lives on rocky bottoms and among seaweed near the intertidal zone from the Boso Peninsula to Kyushu. Eggs are attached to rocks in string-like egg masses. ニシキウズガイ科の巻貝(イラスト)。殻はこま形で,高さ3cm,太さ2.8cm。褐色で黒色の雲形斑が並び,最後の巻きのまわりには小黒斑が並ぶ。殻口はまるくて,内面は真珠光沢がある。ふたは薄くてまるく,褐色。房総半島から九州の潮間帯付近の岩れき底や,海藻の間にすむ。卵はひも状の卵塊で岩に付着させる。【波部 忠重】
