Born: April 7, 1884. [Died] 1973 British New Testament scholar. After studying classical philology and theology at Oxford University, he became a Congregational minister. He later served as professor of hermeneutics at Oxford (1915), Manchester (1930-1935), and Cambridge (1935-1949). He was chairman of the British Bible Reinterpretation Committee (1950). He was a member of the British Academy. He developed stylistic historical research in Britain and advocated understanding Jesus' parables from the perspective of Jesus' concrete life. His main works are "The Apostolic Preaching and its Developments" (1936), "The Johannine Epistles" (1946), and "The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel" (1953).
