A short story by Shichiro Fukazawa. Published in Chuokoron in November 1956. Winner of the first Chuokoron Prize for New Writers. Published by Chuokoron-Shinsha in 1982. The protagonist is an old woman named Orin, who lives in a village where there is a custom of abandoning the elderly on Mt. Narayama to reduce the number of mouths to feed. In order to hasten the day when she is abandoned, Orin breaks her strong front teeth by smashing them into a millstone. Her son, Tatsuhei, reluctantly carries Orin on his back and heads for Mt. Narayama. This unique work is based on the legend of Mt. Ubasute, and as it delves deep into the unconscious layer that lies at the bottom of the Japanese psyche and the darkness of folklore, it became a catalyst for the anti-modern tendency that followed. It captures the essence of human emotion that lies at the base of today's material civilization, and evokes a strong impression. It was made into a film in 1958 by director Kinoshita Keisuke and in 1983 by director Imamura Shohei, both of which became hugely popular.
