Marjah-e Taqlid (English spelling)

…In the 18th century, the Usuli school, which asserted the right of interpretation of legal scholars (ijtihad), won the battle. As a result, the theory of the supreme authority (marjah‐e taqlid) of legal scholars independent of dynastic rule was reaffirmed. In modern times, the senior mujtahids hold the title of āyatullāh, and under them there are many legal scholars called ḥujjat al‐Islām.
