Tottori Prefecture - Tottori
A prefecture in the San'in region facing the Sea of Japan in the northeastern Chugoku region. The prefectural capital is Tottori City. 3,507.05 km2 . 588,667 people (2010). [History] Formerly the territory of Inaba Province and Hoki Province, Sasaki Takatsuna and Nawa Nagato served as shugo in the Middle Ages, and later the Yamana, Amago, and Mori clans held sway, but throughout the early modern period the Ikeda clan held 320,000 koku of land. In 1871 it became Tottori Prefecture, and in 1876 it was incorporated into Shimane Prefecture, before separating in 1881. [Nature] Long and narrow from east to west, the southern part of the prefecture is made up of the Chugoku Mountains, which straddle Okayama Prefecture, and is home to a series of mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, including Mt. Dogo, Mt. Hiruzen, Mt. Nagi, and Mt. Hyonose on the border with Hyogo Prefecture. To the north, a low-lying flat area of 600 to 700 meters is distributed. The Daisen volcanic group rises in the west. The Hino River, Tenjin River, and Sendai River are all short, flowing almost north into the Sea of Japan, and form three plains downstream, the Yonago, Kurayoshi, and Tottori plains, respectively. Sand dune rows can be seen on the coast, such as Tottori and Hojo, and the sand spit of Yumigahama Beach is located in the northwest. The climate is typical of the Japan Coast, with heavy snowfall in winter and few sunny days. [Industry] The population composition by industry is 10.9% primary, 24.8% secondary, and 62.9% tertiary (2005), with a relatively high dependency on primary industry. The cultivated land rate is 12.5%, and productivity is low, with part-time farmers accounting for about 86%. In addition to rice cultivation on the flatlands, sloping land and sand dunes are increasingly being utilized, and fruit trees such as the 20th Century Pear (the best in the country), vegetables such as watermelon, broccoli, and Chinese yam, and tobacco are cultivated. Inpaku beef cattle, dairy cows, chickens, and pigs are thriving. Forest land accounts for 73% of the total area, and Wakasa and Chizu in the east are the centers of forestry. Fishing is based in Sakaiminato and fishing ports east of Tottori City, and flounder, squid, sardines, mackerel, and the local specialty snow crab are caught. The level of industry is low compared to the primary industry. Electrical machinery, food, textiles, woodworking, pulp, and traditional Japanese paper are among the industries. There are two national parks, Daisen-Oki and San'in Kaigan, and two quasi-national parks, Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku and Hyonosen-Goyama-Nagisan, and there are many hot springs and scenery unique to San'in. [Transportation] The Sanin Main Line and National Route 9, which run along the Japan Sea coast, are the main arteries, and major cities have developed along these lines. The Inbi, Hakubi, and Sakai lines branch off from the Sanin Main Line, and the Wakasa Railway, Chizu Express, and Tottori Expressway connect to the east, and the Yonago Expressway to the west. There are two airports, Tottori and Yonago.
