A painter from the mid-Edo period. His name was Morinao. He was born in Akashi, Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture), and was adopted into the Ishida family in Kyoto. He learned painting from Tsurusawa Tankei, became an artist in the imperial court, and was ordained as a hōgen. Based on the techniques of the Tsurusawa school, he established a decorative style of painting that added realism. He was particularly skilled as an educator, and is known for having produced from his pupils painters such as Maruyama Okyo, Tanaka Nutsugen, and Hara Zaichu, each of whom pioneered their own unique artistic realms. He died at the age of 66 and was buried at Kyūgyō-ji Temple in Kyoto. His representative works include the "Flower and Grass Screen" (Sanji Chion-ji Temple, Kyoto) and the sliding door paintings at Sanbo-in Temple, Daigo-ji Temple, Kyoto. <References> Doi Tsugiyoshi, "Research on Early Modern Japanese Painting"
