This refers to children and students who are left alone for a certain period of time after returning home from school. Since the 1960s, the number of dual-income families has increased in urban areas, and it has become common for children to return home earlier than their parents, leaving them alone with the house keys. This is why this term was coined. Local governments and other organizations have established after-school childcare facilities to provide childcare for children who are left alone after school.

学校から帰宅後の一定時間，継続的に，監護者がいない児童生徒をいう。 1960年代から，都市において共働き家庭が増加し，親より早く帰宅する子が，家の鍵を預けられて放任されている状態が目立ってきたことからこの呼称が生じた。地方自治体等は，学童保育施設を設け，放課後の鍵っ子の保育対策を行なっている。
