Igneous rocks poor in silicon dioxide. A solid solution of akermanite (Ca 2 MgSi 2 O 7 ) , gehlenite (Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 ) , and sodamerillite (NaCaAlSi 2 O 7) as end members. Also called melite or meliite. Hardness 5-6, specific gravity 2.95-3.05. Yellow, brown, or greenish brown, tetragonal crystal system. Often plate-like or short columnar. Found in basaltic rocks including nepheline and leucite.
