The meeting of two or more artificial satellites or spacecraft in space and the joining of their bodies. This is an essential technology for assembling a space station, transferring to a space station, and rescuing manned spacecraft. This follows a rendezvous flight, and it is necessary to reduce the shock of docking and to extend the time the two are in rendezvous. Gemini 10 was the first manned spacecraft to successfully dock in 1966, and in 1975 the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft and the US Apollo spacecraft were docked.
