Patent Office - tokkyocho

An external bureau of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Its main duties are to handle matters related to inventions, utility models, designs and trademarks. Specifically, the JPO is responsible for the examination of industrial property rights (industrial property rights) and other matters related to applications, registration of industrial property rights in the original register, issuance of patent certificates and registration certificates, collection of patent and registration fees and other matters related to registration, examination of industrial property rights, and adjudication of industrial property rights. It also has the authority to conduct patent attorney examinations, make decisions and assessments on industrial property rights applications, register industrial property rights, and conduct adjudication of industrial property rights. To carry out these duties, it has the General Affairs Department, Examination Operations Department, Patent Examination Department (1-4), Adjudication Department, and the Industrial Property Rights Council as a council. Until the reorganization of ministries and agencies in January 2001, it was an external bureau of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

経済産業省の外局。発明、実用新案、意匠および商標に関する事務を行うことを主たる任務とする。具体的に特許庁がつかさどる事務は、工業所有権（産業財産権）における審査等のほか出願に関すること、工業所有権の原簿登録、特許証および登録証の交付、特許料および登録料の収納その他登録に関すること、工業所有権についての審査に関すること、工業所有権に関する審判に関することなどである。またその権限は、弁理士試験を行い、工業所有権の出願につき決定および査定し、工業所有権を登録し、工業所有権に関する審判を行うことである。これらの事務を遂行するため、総務部、審査業務部、特許審査（第一～四）部、審判部のほか、審議会として工業所有権審議会がある。なお、2001年（平成13）1月の省庁再編までは、通商産業省の外局であった。
