Epact (English spelling)

Japanese: エパクト（英語表記）epact

A number indicating the age of the moon on a certain day of the year, used to calculate the date of Easter in the church calendar. An epact counts up to 30 and cycles every 19 years in the Metonic cycle. In the Gregorian calendar, it is the age of the moon on January 1. The main purpose of the Gregorian calendar reform was to bring the date of Easter into a certain range. In the church calendar based on the Julian calendar, there were errors in the values of one solar year and one lunar month, and these errors accumulated and caused the Easter season to gradually shift into the summer, so a precise table of epacts was created when the Gregorian calendar reform was made.

教会暦で復活祭の日取りを計算するときに用いられる1年のある一定の日の月齢を示す数。エパクトは30まで数え，メトン周期19年をもって循環する。グレゴリオ暦では1月1日の月齢である。グレゴリオ改暦のおもな目的は復活祭の日を一定の範囲におさめることであった。ユリウス暦によった教会暦では1太陽年，1朔望月（さくぼうげつ）の数値に誤差があり，それが蓄積されて復活祭の季節がしだいに夏にずれこむことになったので，グレゴリオ改暦に際してエパクトに関する精密な表が作られた。
