A town in Kamo District, eastern Gifu Prefecture. It occupies the left bank of the Hida River and the basin of its tributaries, the Shirakawa, Kurokawa, Akakawa, and Samigawa. The central settlement is Kawamata, near the confluence of the Hida and Shirakawa rivers, where the Takayama Main Line passes. It is home to Shirakawa Onsen and is a tourist base for the Hida-Kisogawa Quasi-National Park, including Hisuikyo Gorge. Tea and cypress lumber are its specialties. 237.90 km2 . 9,530 people (2010).
