An annual plant of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows in low-lying marshes in warm regions (illustration). The Japanese name comes from the fact that the entire plant is covered in hairs and the shape of the flowers and the fruit that produces many seeds resembles sesame. The stem is upright, almost unbranched, 10-60 cm tall, and covered with stiff white hairs. The leaves are thick and opposite, narrowly lanceolate or broadly needle-shaped. In summer, the plant produces yellow, tubular flowers with rounded tips that are divided into five lobes. The corolla is 2 cm long, and the lobes are divided into two upper lobes and three lower lobes that are somewhat lip-shaped. The calyx is tubular with a pointed tip and deeply lobed on the ventral side. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
