A city in southern Shiga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center developed as a post town where the Tokaido and Nakasendo roads branched off, and a historic honjin remains. It is a junction between the Tokaido Main Line and the Kusatsu Line, and is surrounded by a large rural area, making it a bustling commercial town. In addition to cultivating pears, grapes, and other fruit trees, greenhouse-grown carnations are shipped to Kyoto. Since the construction of the Ritto Interchange on the Meishin Expressway, there has been a significant influx of electrical equipment, steel, and other factories. It is also becoming a commuter town for Kyoto and Osaka. Gourds are a specialty of the city. The shores of Lake Biwa belong to Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park. In 1993, Lake Biwa became a Ramsar Convention registered wetland. 67.82 km2 . 130,874 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
