A weapon that uses a beam of charged or neutral particles accelerated to near the speed of light using particle accelerator technology used in nuclear physics research, neutralizing or destroying a target using the kinetic energy of the particles and the electromagnetic energy generated as a by-product. The United States began research and development of this weapon, along with laser beam weapons, as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) launched in 1983 as part of the Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) to be mounted on ballistic missile interceptor satellites.
