Born: April 9, 1846 in Ortona sul Mare Died December 2, 1916. Rome Italian composer. He studied violin and composition at the San Pietro Maiera Academy of Music in Naples. He became an assistant professor at the same school upon graduation in 1866, but his health deteriorated and he returned to his hometown. While he recuperated he composed songs and successfully exhibited them in Rome. In 1875 he visited London, where he was recognized and from 1880 he taught as a voice teacher affiliated with the royal family. In 1894 he became a professor of voice at the Royal Academy of Music and obtained British citizenship. He returned to his homeland in 1913. Although he was born in a country where opera was at its height, he loved the spirit of song and elevated Italian song to the level of art song.
