A delicate perennial herb of the Caryophyllaceae family that grows in temperate forests (illustration). The roots are thick and shaped like small radishes. The stems are soft and 5-10cm tall. The leaves are larger at the top, reaching about 3cm in length, and vary in shape from linear to spatula-shaped or nearly circular. In May and June, small flowers on long stalks grow individually in the axils at the top of the stem. The five petals are white, about 5mm long, and unnotched. There are two styles and 10 stamens. Cleistocene flowers grow in the axils at the bottom of the stem. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
