〘Noun〙 When written in Man'yōgana, that is, when Japanese is written using only kanji, this refers to kanji that use the sound of the character to match a Japanese syllable, regardless of the meaning of the character. For example, in the "Man'yōshū," there are many cases where a single kanji character matches a single Japanese syllable, such as "man," "bu," and "rui" in "yama (mountain)" and "nagusamuru (comfort)," but there are also a few examples where a single character matches two syllables, such as "tou" and "san" in "tayutafu nami ni (floating waves)" and "sanitsurafu (scattered fishing)." ⇔Kun-gana
