[Died] April 16, 1935. Bucharest. Romanian writer. Real name Gherasim. Born near Braila, a port city on the lower Danube, he experienced poverty from an early age and participated in the labor movement. Later, he left the country and traveled around the world, becoming acquainted with R. Rolland and publishing his works in French. His representative works include Domniţ a din Snagov (1926), which is based on Romania's past history, Kyra Kyralina (24), a semi-autobiographical work depicting the fate of the working people in his hometown's port town and rural areas, Ciulinii Bǎrǎganului (28), and Codin (29), for which he was called the "Gorky of the Balkans."
