The capital of central Arkansas and the largest city in the state. Population 178,000 (1994). It is also known as the "City of Roses" because of the roses that bloom in the residential areas. Although it developed as a distribution center for agricultural products, the surrounding area is one of the poorest areas in the United States, and for a long time, cotton cultivation and various agricultural products have been the main industries, and industrialization has been delayed. The residents are generally conservative and have strong prejudice against blacks. In 1957, a conflict arose over the admission of nine black students to high school, and white students and parents rioted and prevented the black students from enrolling.
