A city in the southwest of Kochi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center is at the base of the Ashizuri Peninsula, at the head of a submerged coastline. It developed rapidly as a base for deep-sea and offshore fishing from the Taisho to early Showa periods, but now it is stagnant and focuses on coastal fishing. Dried bonito production is popular, and there are also ice and shipbuilding factories. The coast is part of Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. It can be reached by boat from Kochi City or by bus from Nakamura Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway. 266.34 km2 . 16,029 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
