Mount Tarumae

Japanese:
Mount Tarumae

Located in southwest Hokkaido, southeast of Lake Shikotsu, this andesite active volcano stands on the border between Tomakomai and Chitose. It is a triple volcano of the Holocene (about 10,000 years ago) that erupted on the southeast wall of the Shikotsu caldera, which was created by land collapse caused by a huge eruption at the end of the Pleistocene (about 30,000 years ago). It is 1,041 meters above sea level. The outer rim (stratovolcano) is about 1,200 meters in diameter, with Higashiyama (1,024 meters above sea level) at its highest point. There is a flat central crater cone, and in 1909 (Meiji 42), a lava dome (about 450 meters in diameter at the base, about 130 meters above sea level, the highest peak of the entire mountain. It is a natural monument of the road) erupted from the crater. It was regenerated on the site of a lava dome that was blown up in a major eruption in 1874 (Meiji 7), and fumarolic gas and geothermal heat can still be seen. Starting in 1667 (Kanbun 7), there are over 30 records of explosive eruptions at the summit by 1981 (Showa 56). The Tomakomai Meteorological Observatory constantly monitors the volcano. It is located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and a road leads up to the seventh station.
