Counterfeiting (forgery) before the circulation of paper money was centered on the production of fake gold, and alchemy was misused as a technique. Techniques for lowering the quality of gold to increase its quantity and gold plating were already known in ancient Egypt, and in ancient Rome, the spread of counterfeit gold became so unacceptable that Emperor Diocletian banned it, including alchemy, in 293.
