A general term for insects in the family Platypodidae of the order Coleoptera. Approximately 1,000 species have been recorded from around the world, most of which are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, with only 18 species known from Japan. The body is cylindrical, elongated, and mostly brown. The head is wide and not covered by the thorax. The tips of the antennae are rod-shaped, and the first segment of the tarsus is significantly longer. Body length is 2 to 8 mm. Closely related to the family Scolytidae, both adults and larvae live in wood. Males and females form pairs (monogamous) and build nests in wood, breeding ambrosia fungus in the tunnels as food for the larvae. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
