A town in Shiwa County, south of Morioka City, in central Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River flows through the east, and the alluvial plain is wide. Irrigation dams have been built in the alluvial fan in the west, and farmland has been developed. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the town. The Iwate Distribution Center is located here, and wholesale trade is thriving. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 67.32 km2 . 27,205 people (2010).
