A town in Shiwa County, south of Morioka City, in central Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River flows through the east, and the alluvial plain is wide. Irrigation dams have been built in the alluvial fan in the west, and farmland has been developed. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the town. The Iwate Distribution Center is located here, and wholesale trade is thriving. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 67.32 km2 . 27,205 people (2010). 岩手県中部,盛岡市南方の紫波(しわ)郡の町。東部を北上川が流れ,沖積地が広く,西部の扇状地は灌漑(かんがい)用水堰が設けられて開田が進んだ。東北本線が通じる。岩手流通センターがあり,卸売業が盛ん。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。67.32km2。2万7205人(2010)。
