Tosa paper
Handmade washi paper produced in Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture) for about 1000 years. Shortly after Yamauchi Kazutoyo entered Tosa, the Yamauchi family presented it to the Tokugawa family year after year. During the Edo Period, Tosa was already the number one paper-producing region and had established advanced papermaking techniques. It produces a wide variety of high-quality washi paper, the main of which, classified by raw material, are as follows: (1) Kozo Tengucho (thin white paper made by extracting delicate fibers using gauze. Also exported overseas and used for wrapping precious metals, copying calligraphy and paintings, filtering coffee, etc.), Tosa Shoin (high-quality pure white shoji paper), Sugihara (official paper for samurai), Takenaga (for women's hair ornaments), Kosugihara (kaishi), Tosa Karakami (for calligraphy), and calligraphy paper. (2) Mitsumata Tokin (pure white record paper), Wakamidori (for copying), Sasuki Shoin (for records), Ushiiri Shoin (for letter paper), Hanshi, Hankiri, Hakuhoshi (for calligraphy), Zubikishi (for blueprints). (3) Gampi copy paper.
