A genus of unicellular dinoflagellates that swim with two flagella protruding from the front end of a spherical or elliptical body formed by joining two hemispherical or dish-shaped shells. They live a planktonic life in the ocean. One of the two flagella extends forward, while the other either wraps around the cell body or extends to the side. There are one or two brown plastids inside the body, and the nucleus is relatively large. The only known method of reproduction is asexual binary fission, and they often multiply in large numbers in inland bays, causing red tides. In the past, species with spiny protrusions at the front end of the cell were called Prorocentrum , while those without were called Exuviaella , but now many scholars treat the two as the same genus.
