Huai-yi (English spelling)

Japanese: 淮夷 - わいい（英語表記）Huai-yi; Huai-i

An ancient Chinese ethnic group name. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, tribes of Yi origin, with a different cultural lineage from the tribes of the Central Plains centered around the Yellow River basin, were active in the Jianghuai region, and were called the Eastern Yi or Southeast Yi. The Huaiyi were one of them, and were probably named for tribes centered around the Huai River basin. They were powerful, and subduing them was a major challenge for the Shang and Zhou dynasties, and they were often invaded during the Western Period.

中国，古代の民族名。殷・周時代には，黄河流域を中心とする中原の諸族とは文化系統を異にする夷系の諸族が江淮に活躍しており，東夷，東南夷などと呼ばれた。この淮夷もその一つで，淮水流域を中心とする族を呼んだものであろう。勢威強く，殷，周の2王朝にとってその制圧は大きな課題であり，西周期にもしばしば侵入を受けた。
