…A disciple of Song Ik-pil and Yi Yul-gok, he is considered a master of ritual studies along with his son Jin Ji. He was recommended for government office through his studies and played an active role in procuring military rice during the invasions of Japan and the Later Jin Dynasty, but in his later years he devoted himself to education in his hometown, producing among his disciples Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil, and becoming the mainstream of the Giho school. His works include the “Jiran of Family Rites,” which compiles the theories of various schools on “Family Rites” by Zhu Xi, and the “Expression of Kinshiroku.”…

…His scholarship valued insight into fundamental principles and attempted to apply them to practical aspects such as people's livelihood. In the theory of Li-Qi, he adopted a dualistic theory of Li-Qi and advocated the theory of Li-Tong-Qi-Buk, recognizing the superiority of Li, but unlike Yi Toegye, he denied the movement and stability of Li. He visited Yi Toegye at the age of 23 and showed his respect for him throughout his life, but later the Giho school, which continued his academic tradition, was formed and came into sharp conflict with the Yeongnam school, which also looked up to Yi Toegye in relation to party strife (see the entry on Confucianism [Korea]). His disciples included Kim Changsaeng, a master of ritual studies, Jeong Ye, and Jo Heon, and his works included the Yulgok Complete Book, which includes the Seonghak Jiyo, Dongho Mondou, and Gyeomong Yaohye. …
