Cheoljong - Tetsuso

Japanese: 哲宗 - てつそう
Cheoljong - Tetsuso
1076‐1100
Zhao Jie (Zhao Ji), the seventh emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty, reigned 1085-1100. He was the sixth son of Emperor Shenzong. He ascended to the throne at the age of 10, but his grandmother, Empress Dowager Xuanren Gaoshi, reigned as regent. During the eight years of the Yuanyou era, he carried out conservative anti-New Law politics, led by Sima Guang, Su Che, and Lu Dafang. In 1093 (the 8th year of the Yuanyou era), when Gaoshi died, he took personal rule, changed the era name to Shaosheng, appointed Zhang Dun and others, and carried out New Law politics. He intensified party strife by rewriting the Annals of Emperor Shenzong and carrying out a major crackdown on the Old Law party.

Ch'ŏl-jong

1831‐63
The 25th king of the Yi Dynasty of Korea. Reigned 1849-63. He was exiled to Ganghwa Island for his brother's imprisonment, but was suddenly called back to Seoul and ascended to the throne at the age of 19 when the previous king, Heonjong (reigned 1834-49), had no heir. He received no formal education as a king and was at the mercy of his relatives, the Andong Kim clan. During his reign, the tax system was extremely irregular, floods and epidemics were rampant, and in 1862 a nationwide popular uprising called the Jinjutsu Rebellion broke out. In addition, neighboring countries saw the opening of Japanese ports to Japan (1854) and the occupation of Beijing by the British and French allied forces (1860), and British and French ships appeared off the coast of Korea, causing anxiety to both the government and the people.
