Kisangani (English spelling)
Stanleyville was the capital of Oriental Province in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was Stanleyville until 1966. It is located on the Lualaba River, upstream of the Congo River, a little north of the equator. It was once an advance base for Europeans, including explorer Henry M. Stanley, and was built by Europeans in 1883. It is the terminus of the 1,734 km river traffic from Kinshasa. In 1906, a railway was built connecting it to Ubundu upstream, and it developed into a transit point between Kivu Province and Katanga Province. During the Congolese Civil War, it became a base for the Lumumba faction, and in 1964 Belgian paratroopers landed there, and it was occupied by foreign mercenary forces for a time. Today, it is the administrative and economic center, a distribution center for agricultural and livestock products, mainly rice, cotton, coffee, and cocoa, and an industrial city producing beer, furniture, and clothing. There is also an airport and a university. About 50 km upstream, there is the Boyoma Falls, which has become a tourist destination. Population: 682,599 (2004 estimate).
