It is a private institution. Its origins date back to 1874 (Meiji 7), when C.M. Williams, an American Episcopal missionary, opened a private school called Rikkyo School in the Tsukiji foreign settlement in Tokyo. It moved to its current location in Ikebukuro in 1918 (Taisho 7), and in 1922, under the University Act, it became Rikkyo University with two faculties, the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Commerce. The school's founding spirit is character education based on Christian ideals. In 1931 (Showa 6), the Faculty of Commerce was renamed the Faculty of Economics, and in 1944, Rikkyo Science College was established. After the transition to a new university system in 1949 (Showa 24), the Faculty of Science was added. Furthermore, the Faculty of Sociology was established in 1958, and the Faculty of Law in 1959. As of 2010, the university has 10 faculties: Literature, Economics, Science, Sociology, Law, Tourism, Community Welfare, Business Management, Modern Psychology, and Intercultural Communication, and 14 graduate schools: Literature, Economics, Science, Sociology, Law, Tourism, Community Welfare, Business Design, 21st Century Social Design, Intercultural Communication, Business Management, Modern Psychology, Christian Studies, and Law. Affiliated facilities include the Institute of American Studies, the Atomic Energy Research Institute (which ceased operations in 2001), the Institute of Christian Education, the Institute of Latin American Studies, the Tourism Research Institute, and the Social Welfare Research Institute. The Rikkyo Gakuin Corporation, which is the parent company of the university, also runs Rikkyo Elementary School, Rikkyo Ikebukuro Junior High School, Rikkyo High School, Rikkyo Niiza Junior High School, and Rikkyo High School.
