Rakugo. In the mid-Meiji period, Yanagiya Kosan III brought the Kamigata Rakugo story "Toki Udon" to Tokyo. A man stopped a Yotaka soba noodle shop that was selling on the street, praised the shop excessively, and when he asked how much it cost, he was told it was 16 mon. So he cleverly fudged it by saying "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, what time?", "Nine," "Ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen." A spacey man who was watching this tried to imitate him immediately, so he prepared some coins and stopped the soba shop and tried to praise it, but it was so bad that it was impossible to praise it. When the time comes to calculate, he says, "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, what time is it?" "Oh, four," "Five, six, seven, eight..." and ends up losing money. The original story can be found in "Karukuchi Hatsuwarai" (1726), "Zasho Miyage" (1773), "Fuku Kitaru" (1782), and other plays. After Osan III, Sanshotei Karaku VII and Katsura Mikisuke III were among the performers who excelled at this style, and it is still performed by many today.

落語。明治中期、3代目柳家小さんが上方(かみがた)落語の『時うどん』を東京へ移した。往来を流して売っていた夜鷹(よたか)そば屋を呼び止めた男が、やたらにそば屋を褒めたあげく、代金を聞くと16文だという。そこで「一つ、二つ、三つ、四つ、五つ、六つ、七つ、八つ、何刻(なんどき)だい」「九(ここの)つで」「十(とお)、十一、十二、十三、十四、十五、十六」と、うまく1文ごまかしてしまった。これを見ていたぼおっとした男が、さっそくまねをしようと、細かい銭(ぜに)を用意してそば屋を呼び止め、褒めようとしたが、まずくて汚なく褒めようがない。勘定になって「一つ、二つ、三つ、四つ、五つ、六つ、七つ、八つ、何刻だい」「へえ四つで」「五つ、六つ、七つ、八つ……」と損をしてしまう。原話は『軽口初笑(かるくちはつわらい)』（1726）、『坐笑産(ざしょうみやげ)』（1773）、『富久喜多留(ふくきたる)』（1782）などにある。3代小さん以後、7代三笑亭可楽(からく)、3代桂三木助(かつらみきすけ)らが得意としたが、いまでも演(や)り手は多い。
