Dead point - Shiten

In a reciprocating engine, the connecting rod and crank are in a straight line while the piston is moving, and the crank will not move no matter how much force is applied, depending on the direction of the force generated by the piston. This is when the piston is at either end of its reciprocating motion, and is also called a dead point. For example, in a linkage abcd, when abc is in a straight line, even if you try to apply force to c' to move it to the right, ab'c' will not move. This position is called top dead center (top of the diagram ). There are two positions where abc are in a straight line, and when it turns out as shown at the bottom of the diagram , b' will not move even if you apply force to point c' to move it to the left. This position is called bottom dead center.

往復機関などで、ピストンの運動中に連接棒とクランクが一直線となり、ピストンから発生する力の方向によっていかに力を加えてもクランクが動かなくなる位置。ピストンが往復運動の両端にきた場合で、デッドポイントdead pointともいう。たとえばリンク装置abcdで、abcが一直線となったとき、c′に力を加えて右方向に動かそうと思ってもab′c′は動かない。この位置を上死点(じょうしてん)という（図の上）。abcが一直線になる位置は二つあり、図の下のようになったときも、c′点に力を加えて左方に動かそうと思ってもb′は動かない。この位置を下死点(かしてん)という。
