Coloratura - Coloratura (English spelling) Italian

A musical term. It refers to a technical melody that moves lightly and gorgeously by using a succession of small notes and ornamental figures such as trills. It was often seen in opera arias of the 18th and 19th centuries, and sopranos who were suitable for such virtuoso melodies, such as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute," were called coloratura sopranos. Today, when people talk about coloratura, they usually mean this coloratura soprano, but coloratura is not only used for sopranos, but also for alto arias, such as Angelina in Rossini's opera "Cinderella." Furthermore, this term is not limited to vocal music, but is also used in instrumental music such as Chopin's piano pieces.

音楽用語。細かい音符の連続やトリルなどの装飾音型を用いることによって、軽快で華やかに動く技巧的旋律のことをいう。18、19世紀のオペラのアリアに多くみられ、モーツァルトのオペラ『魔笛(まてき)』の夜の女王など、その名人芸的旋律に適するソプラノをとくにコロラトゥーラ・ソプラノとよんだ。現在コロラトゥーラといえば、たいていの場合このコロラトゥーラ・ソプラノをさすが、コロラトゥーラはソプラノだけでなく、ロッシーニのオペラ『シンデレラ』のアンジェリーナのように、アルトのアリアにも存在する。さらにこの用語は声楽曲に限らず、ショパンのピアノ曲など器楽曲においても用いられる。
