The idea of optimization is one trend that symbolizes the modern era, and is used, for example, in optimal control, optimal design, optimal inventory, and optimal distribution networks. Optimization methods are a general term for methods created to solve these real-world problems, but in mathematical terms, they often boil down to extreme value problems. In the simplest case, the problem is to find the extreme value of a one-variable relationship f ( x ), and it is necessary to find the root that satisfies f '( x )＝0. In addition, there are methods such as the golden section method and quadratic interpolation that do not use derivatives or differential coefficients to find extreme values.

最適化という考え方は現代を象徴する一つの方向であり，例えば最適制御，最適設計，最適在庫，最適流通網などのように使われている。最適化手法はこういった現実問題を解くために作られた手法の総称であるが，数学的な表現としては極値問題に帰着する場合が多い。最も簡単なケースでは，一変数関係f(x)の極値を求める問題となり，f’(x)＝0を満たす根を求めることが必要となる。また導関数や微係数を用いないで極値を求める方法として，黄金分割法や二次補間法がある。
