Tokisou - Tokisou

Japanese: トキソウ - ときそう
Tokisou - Tokisou

A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). The rhizome runs horizontally. The stem is 15-30 cm tall. A single leaf is attached slightly upright near the middle of the stem, narrowly elongated and 5-10 cm long. In June and July, a single pale purple flower about 2 cm in diameter blooms at the tip of the stem. The lip petal is three-lobed, the middle lobe is large and obovate, and is densely covered with trichomes. There is no spur. The sepals open slightly flat. It grows in temperate to subarctic marshes, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, and Russia. The name comes from the ibis color of the flower. The closely related Yamatokisou is small overall and rarely blooms. A closely related species is distributed in isolated areas in eastern North America.
