The capital of Magadan Oblast in northeastern Russia. A port city at the head of Nagaevo Bay, a tributary of Tawi Bay, on the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Founded in 1933, it developed as a supply center for goods to the gold-producing areas of the Kolyma River basin. Currently, the city is home to industries such as mining machinery, auto repair, fishery processing, and construction materials. There is a pedagogical university. There is a highway running east from Yakutsk, and an airport connects the city to various parts of the Soviet Union, and there is a regular sea route between Vladivostok and the city. Population: 154,900 (1991 estimate).

ロシア北東部，マガダン州の州都。オホーツク海北岸，タウイ湾の支湾ナガエボ湾の湾奥にある港湾都市。 1933年建設され，コルイマ川流域の産金地への物資の供給地として発展。現在，鉱山機械，自動車修理，水産加工，建設資材などの工業が立地する。教育大学がある。ヤクーツクから東へ延びるハイウェーが通じるほか，空港がありソ連各地と連絡し，ウラジオストクとの間に定期航路が開けている。人口 15万 4900 (1991推計) 。
