The capital of Magadan Oblast in northeastern Russia. A port city at the head of Nagaevo Bay, a tributary of Tawi Bay, on the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Founded in 1933, it developed as a supply center for goods to the gold-producing areas of the Kolyma River basin. Currently, the city is home to industries such as mining machinery, auto repair, fishery processing, and construction materials. There is a pedagogical university. There is a highway running east from Yakutsk, and an airport connects the city to various parts of the Soviet Union, and there is a regular sea route between Vladivostok and the city.
